【Personal Profile】

Dr. Guo Shuyong is dean and professor of School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Shanghai International Studies University. He was born in Shandong Province in East China and had plentiful professional background in the army and legislature in China in 1990s and 2010s. Now he is vice president of the Association of Political Science in Shanghai, and foreign affair consultant specialist of Shanghai Municipal Government, etc. He is lately appointed as the chief editor of International Review, one of the most outstanding CSSCI journals in China focusing on China’s international relations theory studies and China-US relations studies.

Prof. Guo was admitted to the Department of International Politics at Fudan University to get a PhD degree. From early 2000s on, He taught first as vice professor and then as professor in School of International and Public Affairs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, until he transferred to serve as Head of Section of Legislation at People's Congress of Shanghai in 2010s.  

Prof. Guo is regarded as among the few leading theorists who introduced constructivism from USA to China in 1990s, and the strong advocate of international political sociology (IPS) as a new discipline early in 2001,6 years earlier than his English counterparts in 2007 when they published the magazine named International Political Sociology. From 2016 on, he gained fame as representative of cultural internationalism that says yes to global cultural cooperation and coexistence of civilizations during turbulent times. In past 30 years, his theoretical research fields include theory of international relations, soft power strategy and people`s congress system in China and so forth.

With influential academic papers in international and domestic academic periodical, his representative books include Cultural Internationalism: The Logic of a New International Governance (Routledge, 2021), Constructivism and International Politics (Shanghai People`s Press, 2020), Introduction to Area Studies In the New Era (Higher Education Press,2019), On Democracy and Rule of Law in China (Shanghai People`s Press,2015), Introduction to International Political Sociology (Current Affairs Press,2014), China's Soft Power Strategy (Current Affairs Press,2012), and The Logic of the Rise of Great Power (Beijing University Press,2006). He is also the translator of Neo-realism and its Critics (2002), A Grand Strategy for America (2005), Cultural Realism (2015), and G20 governance in the Era of Globalization (2015).
