SISUChina Studies Program (CSP) Master’s Degree


Overview

The China Studies Program (CSP) of ShanghaiInternational Studies University (SISU) offers a broad, interdisciplinaryapproach to the study of China. In 2014 September, the Institute of ChinaStudies began to enroll its first year international students for the masterdegree. At the same year, the Ministry of Education approved China Studiesqualification of the establishment of Doctoral and Master degree under thefirst level discipline of Political Science. The doctoral program will start torecruit students from 2015 and the master program will start to enroll studentsfrom 2015. Following is the introduction for the English-Master program forInternational Students. During the two-year program design, overseas studentswill receive training on Chinese history and culture systematically and studythe politics & governance, economy, foreign policy and society of Chinacomprehensively. With the strong research background on foreign languages andcultures in SISU, students are offered the opportunity to deepen theunderstanding of China through comparative studies on Chinese and foreigncultures and counties. Upon completion of the program, graduates will earn aMaster’s degree, as recognized by the Ministry of Education of the People'sRepublic of China. Graduates from this program will be better prepared for manyprofessional careers related to China as well as for further academic work.

Degree Requirements


The CSP is comprised of two components:


Courses:

Students must complete about 10 major-relatedcourses. Intensive Chinese language course, public elective courses andinternship are also required for graduation.

Thesis

Students must finish a dissertation of no lessthan 10000 words in English with an abstract in Chinese in no less than 1000characters and successfully defend it to earn a Master of Law degree.

Courses with * symbol are compulsory. Studentsare required to finish about 5 – 7 other courses related in the 3 divisions.

Application Qualifications

Applicants shall be Non-Chinese citizens in goodhealth who are university graduates with bachelor’s degree.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants must have a good command of English,with one of the following: TOEFL IBT (internet based) test result of at least80 points, TOEFL (computer based) test result of at least 213 points, TOEFL(paper based) test result of at least 550 points, or IELTS test result of atleast 6.0.Applicants with IELTS between4.5 and 6.0 or equivalent may be admitted conditionally. Conditional studentswill be required to pass an Entrance Examination in English.

Thisrequirement does not apply to an applicant who has studied for at least twoyears at, or received a degree from an English speaking high school, college,or university.

Entrance Examination

Entrance Examination includes written and oraltest, is held in late May or early June. The exact examination date and placewill be informed via e-mail by the Graduate College of SISU.

Application Materials

2) Diploma and academic record in original ornotarized copy in English or Chinese.

3) Photocopy of HSK certificate or Chineseproficiency certification.*

4) Personal statement, about 1000 words, writtenin Chinese or in the language which meets the academic requirement of theprogram, including study and work experiences, research results and study plan.

5) The index and abstract of published papersand any other materials to certify your research abilities.

6) Two original recommendation letters fromprofessor or associate professor in English or Chinese.

7) Photocopy of passport.

8) 4 passport photos (in size of 125px * 100px).

9) TOEFL / IELTS certificate or certificationfrom the institution awarding your most recent degree confirming the languageof instruction is English.
